In Which We Talk About… Rules and Seasons!

So there’s been a LOT of conversation and buzz lately about the flurry of announcements that we’ve made regarding the future of the D&D Adventurers League. We’ve got rules changes, new content for Dragon Heist and Dungeon of the Mad Mage, the sudden appearance of Eberron-based organized play, WHEW!

I’ll be honest, the last couple weeks have been crazy. The AL news, some real life drama (“real life”? FIE!), office-based stuffed at the ‘ol “day job”… it’s been tough. Thanks for bearing with us while we’ve been hard at work gathering feedback, processing notes and emails, speaking with players, DMs, and store owners all over the world. You’re all super passionate and invested in the continued success of the hobby and storylines, and so are we! Without further ado…

Rules!

I recently went through about 325 pending posts across the main AL group and the DM group on Facebook, reviewed the ongoing threads in those groups, and did an initial email scan (staggeringly high numbers all around). I was able to distill those pending notes into a shared internal document for our team which is currently over 30 pages; many of the notes were duplicated and shared amongst multiple folks, a great number were shared by our own views on the changes, and some were just not quite feedback (more off-topic than anything). We – Lysa and I – will be reviewing that list, compiling it down to discussion points, and bringing it out to our peers on the admin team. The discussion internally has taken many heads, tones, and twisting paths; rest assured, we’re just as passionate about the upcoming changes as you are!

Seasons!

The upcoming season 8 adventures are soon to be posted in our calendar on the main page… ALONG WITH THE EBERRON ONES! Please note that the Eberron ones don’t have premiere dates as the September 21st launch date is the date that these adventures begin rolling out to dmsguild at a rate of one every Friday. The level 0 adventure is optional and provides background details, with the core storyline being numbered 01 through 11. The ‘optional’ content details out some of the background and NPCs and will help players develop a deeper understanding of what’s going on (as well as serving as an intro to how Eberron encourages a different playstyle and different themes) but you will not need to play it to appreciate the awesome content that is steamrolling this way! But it helps. I mean, that’s just my opinion.

Also, many people have asked about Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Ravnica, so on those notes I can share the following:

  • Dungeon of the Mad Mage is part of season 8, along with Dragon Heist
  • Ravnica comes out in November, so there’s nothing to report at this time (yes, we’re aware that Dungeon of the Mad Mage comes out in November as well, but there’s only so much news we can process in a given week!)

I’ve gotten a number of inquiries about playtesting this content. Much of what is here is developed internally, with some of it coming out through the Guild Adepts. This means that these materials will NOT be delivered via the traditional AL playtest method. Additionally, the internal playtest list is not accepting new applicants and the Guild Adepts are responsible for their own playtests and results (and their players are also drawn from the internal playtest list).

Soon!

Join me on the 10th as we talk about factions. I’ve got lore, mechanic stuff, and some behind the scenes information for everyone!
